Great Smoky Mountains National Park: Fire Fuel Modeling
The GRSM vegetation mapping project was extended to include fire behavior fuel modeling for the entire park. Working in conjunction with fire experts at GRSM, fuel classes based on U.S.Department of Agriculture (USDA) publication, “Aids to Determining Fuel Models for Estimating Fire Behavior”, INT-122, by H.E. Anderson, 1982, were developed for eastern deciduous forest. A rule-based model was then created that determines the fuel class from overstory and understory vegetation databases. The resulting fire behavior fuel class maps/data sets will be used for fire management applications in GRSM.
