Brooklyn Cemetery Meeting September 7, 2006 The cemetery is on the list of 2007 MLK Day of Service Projects. Last MLK Day, about 75 volunteers, including 15 from Home Depot, worked in the cemetery. 262 Graves have been identified. This is more than the 198 listed in Meriweather’s historical records. We estimate that there may be as many as 1000 based on the depressions of possible unmarked graves. Trustees: Bill Berryman explained some of the requirements for creating a new cemetery trust. Marian will be one of the trustees and she will contact three other potential trustees. These trustees will be able to authorize work to be done in the cemetery and decide how money raised would be spent. Bill will find out if any attorneys will work pro bono to draft the court petition and guide us through the process of re-establishing the trust. Survey: Once the cemetery has trustees, they will be able to authorize a survey of the cemetery to clear up possible encroachments that may be taking place and to find any graves on the perimeters. Finding and marking the survey stakes would be a good activity for volunteers. Nonprofit Status: In the future, the trustees may decide to establish a nonprofit to manage the cemetery or ask established nonprofits to raise funds and coordinate volunteer activities. Potential nonprofits are Hancock Community Development Corporation or Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. Other nonprofits to consider: Community Connection helps nonprofits get started and East Athens Development Corporation manages Gospel Pilgrim Cemetery.
