What

Brooklyn/ Bethlehem Cemetery Preservation/Restoration Project Continues
  • to remove debris from the cemetery at 9:00 a.m.
  • to capture some personal remembrances and family history
  • to share a pot luck lunch at 1:00
When Please join us on Feb. 17 to help us finish the job we started on MLK Day.  We had a great turnout and made good progress in removing significant overgrowth from many areas within the cemetery.  Several piles of brush were left in the cemetery and moving them out will be our main focus for this day’s work.  We have gloves, but we need hands and tools to fill them!
Where Meet behind the Clarke Middle School cafeteria at 9:00.  Use the bus entrance from Alps Road.
Exciting finds There have been many significant new finds in the cemetery, and it is heart-warming and inspiring to hear many of the stories told by relatives.  For example, on Memorial Day:
  • Rev. Mosley found the headstone of Pleasant Jones, founder of the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. The church plans to recognize the role he played in Athens history.
  • Meriwether Rhodes located a fallen, hidden headstone that proved to be that of Rachel Daniel, 1820 – 1911. I can only imagine what stories will come to light about her long life, her tribulations, and the contributions she made!  There are many real-life stories here that bring history to life and recognizes those who have been mostly forgotten.
Lunch is served Our plan is to work until 1:00 and then host a potluck lunch in the cafeteria.  Bring a favorite dish to share with the volunteers. Hot dogs will be provided.
Recording history continues Here is another way to help if you cannot work in the cemetery.
  • Please invite friends and relatives who have an interest in the Brooklyn Cemetery to join us at 1:00 p.m.   We need to hear stories about those buried here.
  • Please bring pictures of loved ones, appropriate letters or obituaries that we can scan and return immediately.
  • We’d love to have veterans’ records and photos to start recognizing the role they played in serving our country.

We will have sound and video recorders. Help us remember the past and make this day memorable too.

What does the future look like for this work? After the potluck, we will have a brief meeting to discuss goals for our work. We will share and discuss visions of where our work should proceed.  What should be done to protect, preserve, and recognize the cemetery?
