Lichens are symbiotic organisms comprised of algae and fungi. They color trees, rocks, boulders, and soil - covering 8% of the Earth's surface - and have many uses, including to monitor environmental quality due to their pollution sensitivity.

This fully-subsidized TEACHER WORKSHOP is designed to enhance educators' understanding of LICHEN biology, ecology, natural history, identification, and uses through classroom, laboratory, and field studies; to assist in building a lichen biomonitoring network; and to develop geospacial knowledge and mapping skills.

This is a residential workshop (housing & meals provided) consisting of multiple meetings, beginning with a five-day session July 8-12, 2007, and three additional one-day sessions on Saturdays throughout the year (October 2007, January 2008, March 2008 - to be scheduled in consultation with participants).

Participants will:

  1. Experience Hands-on Instruction
  2. Learn to Identify Georgia's Most Common Lichens
  3. Go on Field Trips
  4. Learn to Use a Geographic Positioning System (GPS) Unit to Map Lichens
  5. Learn to Utilize Lichens in the Classroom and Laboratory
  6. Participate in Building a Computerized State-Wide Map of Lichens Linked to Air Quality (Biomonitoring) in Georgia

Participants will receive:

  1. Lodging/ Meals/ Travel Stipend
  2. A Garmin Gecko Geographic Positioning System (GPS) Unit
  3. Full Color Text Books On Lichens, Identification Keys, other Materials
  4. Hand-held portable UV-light
  5. Hand Lens, Field Notebook, Chemicals
  6. 5 PLUs
  7. …and have a lot of fun!
